Description:

This paper presents a bibliographical review on the effect of aging on asphalt mixtures. This phenomenon, characterized mainly by a hardening of the asphalt mixtures, is a complex process produced by the incidence of both external (extrinsic) and intrinsic variables of the mixture. Researchers have differentiated two stages during aging. The first is the one corresponding to the short-term aging that occurs during the manufacture, storage, transportation and laying of the mixture; while the second, termed long-term aging, occurs during the life in service of the mixture. The effects produced by the aging are due to a series of processes, which are mainly of chemical or physical order, classifying the aging in chemical aging or, physical aging or steric hardening. In order to study the effect of aging on the behavior of the mixtures, a series of accelerated aging laboratory tests have been developed throughout the literature to simulate both the aging of bitumens that form asphalt mixtures and the aging of mixtures.
