CO₂ emission reduction has become a cornerstone of global and European policy. Europe has committed to cutting CO₂ emissions, aiming for a 55% reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. In this context, the transport sector has been identified as one of the largest CO₂ producers. With over 90% of European roads paved with asphalt, the asphalt industry holds significant potential to reduce emissions.

Proper maintenance creates more durable surfaces with improved rolling resistance, reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 5%. This equals annual savings of 14 million tons of CO₂—equivalent to removing 3 million cars from roads. Well-maintained roads also benefit electric vehicles, reduce traffic noise, improve travel time, and lower vehicle maintenance costs. Additionally, asphalt’s recyclability aligns with circular economy principles. Despite these benefits, road maintenance faces budgetary and technological challenges. The establishment of the European Road Maintenance Forum (#ERMF2024) provides a collaborative platform to address these issues.

The International Road Maintenance Day (IRMD) is a global industry-led initiative launched in 2018 to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of preventive road maintenance, particularly in reducing transport-related emissions. Each year, it gains remarkable digital traction, supported by a dedicated website (roadmaintenanceday.org) and annual hashtags like #IRMD2025 and #ERMF2025.

Brussels Event – 3 April 2025
Aligned with IRMD (celebrated annually on the first Thursday of April), the ERMF will host a hybrid event at EAPA’s Brussels office, featuring workshops with European and global perspectives. The event is free and open to all, with online participation available. In-person attendance is first-come, first-served due to limited capacity.
