Biography

Dr. William Lee Bandy is an "Investigador Titular C, de T.C." in the Instituto de Geofísica, UNAM.

His research interests deal with the structure, tectonics and geodynamic processes occurring at convergent margins, with a particular focus on crustal deformation related to changes in plate motions.   His research into convergent margins started while he was a Masters student at Texas A&M University in the late 1970´s, under the guidance of Dr. T.W.C. Hilde, with a study of the structure and tectonic history of the Izu-Bonin arc, located in the western Pacific south of Japan.  After a brief diversion in the oil industry from 1979 to 1985, where he worked as a seismic interpreter, he returned to Texas A&M University to pursue a PhD degree and to continue with his research interests.  As a PhD student he was involved in studies into the structure and geodynamic processes along several subduction zones, including the Peru Trench and the Middle America Trench off Mexico.   Data collected during the 1987 SEAMAT campaign of the N.O. Jean Charcot along the MAT off Manzanillo formed the basis of his PhD dissertation: Geological and Geophysical Investigation of the Rivera-Cocos Plate Boundary:  Implications for Plate Fragmentation.  The dissertation was given the award "Distinguished Doctorial Research" by the Alumni Association of Texas A&M University.  After receiving his PhD degree in August 1992, he continued his investigation into the structure, tectonics and geodynamics of western Mexico as a research scientist at the Instituto de Geofisica, UNAM.  Since 1992 he has participated in five international projects with his colleagues from France, Spain, Japan and the USA.  He has also participated in more the a dozen marine geophysical campaigns aboard UNAM´s research ships the B.O. EL PUMA and the B.O. JUSTO SIERRA.

Dr. Bandy has published over 60 articles in SCI indexed journals and is the principle editor on two books dealing with the geodynamics of the western Pacific margin of Mexico and Latin America.  He is currently a member of the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias, holds Nivel II in SNI, and is an associate editor for the journal Geofisica International.
