José Pablo Aguiar Moya


Biography

Graduated in Civil Engineering (with honours), Costa Rica University, 2004. He continued his studies at the University of Texas, Austin, where he graduated in 2007 as M.S.C., Civil Engineering, specialising in Transports, and in 2011 he earned his PhD in the same area.

He has developed his professional carreer at the university. At LanammeUCR, already during his degree course, he stood out as Research Assistant during two years, and later on as researcher and lecturer at the same university. Collaborator in research projects on Pavement Engineering in High Module Asphalt Mix Design, Application of the UCL Method at asphalt mixes at national level and Cobble Paving.

At the University of Texas, Austin, he has been working during six years as Research Assistant at Graduate Level, collaborating in Pavement Performance Modeling projects, Reliability Evaluation of Pavement Design and Analysis and Mechanistic-Empirical models for flexible pavements, among others.

Again in Costa Rica, he returned to LanammeUCR as coordinator of the Materials and Pavements Department of the PITRA (after the Spanish initiales for Programme of road infrastructures) programme, a position he holds since 2011. He coordinates the research programme in materials and pavements, such as granular materials and soils, asphalt binders, asphalt mixes and rehabilitation techniques. As far as this aspect is concerned, he also offers consultancy to the rest of the PITRA-LanammeUCR entities. He is lecturer at the Civil Engineering School of the Costa Rica University, where he teaches pre- and post-graduate courses.

He stands out as one of the most productive researchers of LanammeUCR, as he has published more than 70 technical works, a number that continues to grow. He has been awarded with the “Best articles” prize at the Sixth Annual Interuniversity Symposium on Infrastructure Management.

The following awards recognise the value of his professional activity:

  • First prize at the Concurso Internacional 2008 on data analysis LTPP, ASCE (Category  2: Post-graduate students)
  • University of Texas Professional Development Award 2010
  • Kolodzey Grant 2011, CAEE Department, The University of Texas at Austin
