Biography

LanammeUCR (National laboratory of materials and structural models, University of Costa Rica) is an academic research entity of the Civil Engineering School of the Costa Rica University. It was founded in the fifties, and specialises in applied research, teaching and technology transfer as far as protection of boh civil and road infrastructures and lifelines are concerned.

Fitted with the latest equipment and highly qualified human resources, trained in leading centers of scientific and technological development worldwide, who permanently update their knowledge in the areas of structural engineering, seismic science, transport infrastructures, geotechnics and of materials.

Within the framework of the University of Costa Rica’s strategy to increase its links with the productive sector through technology transfer, the main objectives of LanammeUCR are protection of human life and investments in civil and road infrastructure and lifelines. Its work contributes to improving quality, reducing costs and increasing technological innovation, from a modern engineering perspective, essential for a key sector of the economy.

To achieve this purpose, it is consolidating its own technological platform to meet the new demands of Central American countries related to their efforts to improve their competitiveness in the context of worldwide economic globalization; reinforce civil and road infrastructures, port facilities and lifelines; mitigate the impact and destructiveness of natural phenomena (earthquakes, hurricanes, among others); optimize the use of construction materials in complex infrastructure works and guarantee an adequate balance between safety and possible costs in construction and design.

It aims to contribute to full integration of scientific work and technology transfer in the construction of the development models of our country and of the Central American fellow countries, in search of a better positioning of the region, from the System of Central American Integration, in the complex global context of this new century.

This academic research unit of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) whose main purpose is  autonomous development of research, teaching, technical collaboration and technology transfer in terms of protection of civil and road infrastructures and lifelines, is located in the Central American region, easily accessible and with a clear service vocation.
